Thanks everyone who was part of this transport! JULIAN AND JOSEPHINE

The story of Julian's journey began last October when volunteer Robin Waldman volunteered at FBM (Fundacion Benjamen Mehnert) Shelter near Sevilla Spain.  She of course fell in love with a very scared black galgo named Iker and she swore she would come back for him in the Spring.

The sweet thing is that even though she was going back for Iker, she could not stop thinking about a little red Podenco named Julian. As soon as she came back home to Canada, she splashed Julians picture on Face Book and emails saying that  a sweeter Podenco could not be wished for..anyone interested in Julian? She even took his pictures to a Greyhound Gathering and presented him to a crowd of greyhound folks not knowing that a couple there would change his luck!

Time passed, Robin was on her way to Spain and she gets an email asking about how to adopt Julian..well a little to late to work out all the details, but Robin contacted GRIN and we started working out  a plan for Julians journey. His new mom Betty Swavely and her sister in law would go to Madrid to pick him up!

Since the adopters were going all the way to Spain to pick up Julian from the U.S. we had another wonderful adopter ask about bringing a special galga named Josephine back with Julian. One month before, Josephine had been one of 70 galgos and podencos rescued from a horrific encampment named Bullas in Southern Spain near Murcia. She has been with Galgos del Sol and she is one lucky little girl to be rescued and now she is  being readied for her trip to the U.S.  Her new mom  Ms. Michael Owens and her many hounds are anxiously awaiting the arrival day!  We will update on their happy endings when they arrive!  Julian will also be living with another galgo and has a great life in store! Thanks to everyone involved two lives have been saved and the best is yet to come!  Welcom Julian and Josephine!!

It Takes A Village!

APRIL 2-3, 2012  It Takes a Village Transport!

The journey for these four lucky dogs, Nando, Yuri, Manolo and Rochi, began back in September 2011 when volunteer Marylou Hecht and her son Noah offered to bring back dogs for G.R.I.N.

I say it takes a village because it truly does to pull off any transport as many associations will tell you. I want to thank the "Village" that helped make this one happen. On the U.S. side, all our adopters Marylou Hecht, MaryAnn Moore, Nancy Marble and Teri Ruhl as well as U.S. flight patron volunteer transporter Fabio and his wife Christine who fostered for a day,  and special galgo angel Barbara Manter.  On the Spain side, from Valencia,  Silvia of Galgo Connection Spain and her transport volunteer Hortencia and from Murcia area Tina of Galgos del Sol and her family who also hosted our volunteers and provided transport of the dogs, and finally, our newest help, Diane and her husband, of  from Ibizen Hound Rescue who also took part in transporting and hosting our volunteers. We thank Gaynor also in Murcia for her hospitality  during our volunteers stay in Murcia. All these people have made a difference in the lives of the following hounds! Thank you each and everyone of you for all you have done to make this happen!!  Quick note: Marylou and son Noah experienced a transit strike in Spain the day they were to continue their voyage to the south and as you can imagine, that was quite a challenge, but they made it! Also last leg of trip, there was a change of planes and all four dogs were not able to board the plane. Quick action by the team and Noah left with two one day and Marylou stayed at a dog friendly hotel near Madrid airport and left the next day with the help of Tina and her family!! Whew!!

I start with Rochi now Enrico, because he waited the longest for his forever home. He was rescued by Silvia GCS  from a terrible encampment with another podenco who was quickly adopted. We thought in no time Rochi would also be so lucky..but no, he waited and waited, two years passed..finally one day when Teri heard about the possible transport I presented Rochi to her. He would fit into their pack, had a lovely personality, had been fostered but sadly a year later had to return to live in a pensione as his foster home had lost their home. So, once again Rochi's luck was low, until the day Teri said "we will adopt Rochi"!! It was a great day because GRIN had adopted a Podenco pup  to them previously and it was a match made in heaven. We are so happy for this dream that came true!  Rochi has his family living large in upstate NY !

 Nando was abandoned in Murcia. He had found refuge with Ibizen Hound Rescue and when Marylou saw him on the website she knew this was her boy! Well I have to say the "ears"  made quite an impression on her..we believe he is a galgo podenco cross and he is a total love bug. Welcome home Nando now known as Lando you are a treasure,  a diamond , a bit in the rough, and totally irresistable!  He will share his home with Yim a rescued doggie from Thailand. They will enjoy life in NH. Thank you to Marylou for adopting him and also to her son Noah for bringing him and the other three back for G.R.I.N.

Next comes Yuri/Yadi (Yadier Molina Solera de Murcia Moore) better known as "The Fuzz Face"..who could resist this face? Well MaryAnn could not..she had been looking for quite a while at every fuzzy galgo that was on every website for over a year, but I am not keeping track! OK finally through GdS, this boy was available and we jumped at it! Yuri came from a kill station, young and abandonded..they called him a Galgo Russo..or, Russian Galgo, but he is really just a fuzzy Galgo!  A sweet affectionate and young boy ready to be loved and cared for..well he has it all now..and two galgos to play with and a few greyhounds as well! Happy life Yadi the best is yet to come living in MO with your mom and canine friends!!

 Last but not least on this transport was  a home for one more Podenco, a boy named Manolo. Manolo was rescued by a lady named Toni in Murcia and he found his way to Galgos del Sol. The picture of him abandoned, laying down in a field with the saddest look was heartbreaking, thankfully he allowed himself to be rescued! He was no dumbie!! His luck had turned and his ticket was bought, he would be coming to the U.S. to live with Nancy and Taz the Pharoah Hound and a host of canine friends in South Carolina.  Thank you Nancy for searching for a needy boy..he is a sweet and mellow fellow a perfect addition to her family! From abandonment in Murcia to the good life in SC, Welcome Home!

Operation Rehala- 24 Hours Left

G.R.I.N has been following the disturbing story of yet another horrific illegal encampment holding 120 Podencos and Galgos in Bullas in the Murcia area in the south of Spain. Rescue groups have shot into action once again. Friday March 9th is the only day left for these groups to rescue the dogs that are left. This has been on the news in Spain, in the newspapers and reported thoughout Spain and Europe, but help is still needed for those on the ground in this rescue. Pro-Setter a hunting dog rescue in the area has head up this rescue along with Galgos del Sol, La Fortaleza, Henrietta Foundation, and many other rescue groups in Spain are helping such as Galgos 112, Galgo Connection Spain and others. Donations are needed for medical help of these dogs who are in very rough conditions. Please read the links below to see the conditions these poor dogs have had to endure. No food, water, nothing but misery. You can help! Donate through G.R.I.N.  for a tax deductible contribution and we will send funds on to them, you can also go directly to their site as well. G.R.I.N. PRESENTS AT SOLVANG GREYHOUND GATHERING

G.R.I.N. wants to thank Teri Rogo who again gave us  the opportunity to do a presentation at the 8^th annual  West Coast Greyhound Gathering in Solvang California.  We are happy to report we had a great group of hound lovers turn out! Telma Shaw, board member of G.R.I.N. did a power point presentation of a review of G.R.I.N.’s work in 2011 which encompassed a history of the situation in Spain and the plight of the Galgos and Podencos as well as the work done here in the U.S. to help the shelters G.R.I.N. supports in Spain.  Many happy endings were shown of the dogs G.R.I.N. has helped through our fundraising. The second segment was a presentation done by volunteer Mora Gorzani who put together a photo essay with music of the shelter, Fundacion Benjamin Mehnert  in Sevilla, that  she visited in December 2011.  Mora had heard about the need for volunteers at these shelters at last year’s presentation and had stayed in contact with Telma about going to help out. After months of thinking about it, Mora said she just had to go, and she did just that and took suitcases filled with coats, collars and leashes to the shelter.  Since then she has also helped the shelter by sending blankets for the dog beds which were very needed. We thank Mora for her zeal and initiative to take on a trip to Spain to help the Galgos!

Also G.R.I.N. wants to thank Laura White who attended again this year with her friend Claudia Hayner. Since last year’s Solvang these two gals have been very busy making hundreds of coats for the galgos at the shelters and have also coordinated booths with G.R.I.N.  information at dog events in Central California.  This year they both helped man our G.R.I.N  information table. We also thank Marci Jones who although in a wheelchair recovering from a broken ankle, made the effort to also vend and raise funds for GRIN at the event!

Also thank you to the attendees of the gathering who brought their contributions of coats, collars, leashes and dog toys for the Galgos. These donations  will be greatly appreciated by our friends in Spain and  also we thank  our donors who without your help we could not continue our work. Thank You all for your support!

Hope to see you next year in Solvang and we have word that a few Podencos will be making next year’s West Coast Greyhound Gathering! See you then…

RESCUE OF JEREZ GALGOS IN NEED

Feb. 7, 2011 Valencia Spain

Galgo Connection Spain rescues Jerez Galgos from kill station. These are just a few of the galgos that have been rescued from Jerez this week. They have all come in a lamentable state. We hope that in time they will recover and find the happiness they so deserve. G.R.I.N. has donated a E.A.F. grant to GCS to help in this overwhelming effort. The help they need will continue as it will take many months for them to recover from the starvation, dehydration, wounds, abuse and the operations needed, in order to be ready for adoption and the hope of a new life. We thank our donors for your ongoing support so that we can reach out and change the outcome for these deserving hounds. Thanks to the end of the hunt season all our friends in Spain are battling each day to try to save the ones they can. With your help we can continue. Thank You.

UPDATE ON RESCUE FEB. 5, 2012 - FUNDS RAISED TO HELP!

EMERGENCY FB ONLINE AUCTION TO HELP RESCUE THESE GALGOS

When Galgos del Sol put on the photos of the distressing case of over 70 galgos all in worrying conditions some were sad, some were angry and some just got plain busy. Yep, we are talking about Wayne de Greyhound, Chai Huggablehound and Sherry Van Dyke all from the USA & supporters of GRIN. Whilst we were running around like lunatics these three amazing people (sorry one amazing person and two amazing greyhounds as the mums did nuffin) literally knocked up out of no-where an emergency online auction on Facebook. Obviously when we are picking up large numbers of dogs in one go we are concerned about the financial implications as each dog costs a minimum of 250 euros plus the kennelling, food, transport and treatment for the ill ones who need further care. Knowing that this was going on in the background definitely eased some worries & gave us the confidence to just go for it. So as you know I had to zip to the USA with two dogs and over there was lucky enough to meet Sherry herself. A beautiful women with a bulging heart just bursting for the galgos. She came running into the room after speaking to Chai Huggablehoundhound and said "oh my god, we might hit $4000" and with that she slumped into her chair in disbelief. On a personal note it has lifted my spirits my confidence and given me a lift to know that so many people support Galgos del Sol and believe in us that we can together as a team can make a difference, yes you, YES YOU and us, a team. Thanks to those who donated items and to those who placed bids. Total raised ‎$ 4,269.14 USD . Jeepers creepers this is simply amazing. From us and the galgos we have rescued and the galgos that are waiting.... GRASSY ARSE AMIGOS. BESOS MUY GRANDES. You are friggin awesome!

 

 

A RESCUE EFFORT IS UNDERWAY.  Jan. 22, 2012

These are pictures from a hunter's breeding camp in the south of Spain. This owner has been denounced and some of the dogs are

being released to rescue associations. Not all will be let go as the hunters still want to use them for competition!  There are 70 galgos in this

dire situation but all is being done to save the ones they can save. We will direct any funds we receive to the associations that need the

help as we get more and more information. Tina of Galgos del Sol www.perrosdelsol.es is there right now helping coordinate with other associations as well. The rescued dogs will be needing on going care. Donations appreciated. Tax deductible donations through our website

UPDATE ON DONNA FROM ENCARNI OF DDEVIDA: Feb 2012

Donna visited to the vet on last week. The sutures has been removed and now she must wait 2 weeks to removed some of the metals. She walks with her leg and she is happy. As you can see in the pictures Donna is more tall and so beautiful!

Yesterday the small Donna was operated. The surgery lasted for 5 hours. Poor little Donna.

The traumatologist found many complications because she had small bony pieces which had been united very bad. An of the fracture in the joint and was very difficult putting in place proper bone. It was necessary to remove many pieces of bone in a very complicated area. Donna's fracture does not seem recent and the bones had United in a manner very difficult to mend.

We now must hope the recovery of Donna. She wants to play and walk normally, but his leg has a great weight with these metals, poor...

She must visit to the vet on 10 days, I will let you know.
