Finding cold Lurchers in Alaska 2008/02/05 09:59
Last September Daisy found us. She is a Greyhound/Great Dane and we got the Lurcher bug! My web page pretty much speaks for itself. www.aklurcher.com

Since I started this I have learned that, here in Alaska, we have a large number of sight hound mixes in the sled dog community. Mushers are trying to breed speed into the sled dogs. Some the puppies are first generation, 1/2 sight hound, and just a transition breeding. In many cases these dogs cannot live outside in our winters. Today it’s -20 F. Finding homes for large indoor dogs is difficult. I personally don’t care about the hair and we are working around the crowding on the furniture. This summer we will set up kennels with a heated indoor kennel area.

I want to start connecting Lurchers to potential new homes in warmer climates. Would you link me to your page?

I have one new boy to add this week. A Saluki X Pointer/sled dog. He looks like a heck of a hunter. He is now housed at a sled dog kennel in a heated barn, and one of 10 dogs. He is not interested in pulling and gets cold easily. I will go visit him today or tomorrow to get photos and check him out.

Any help rehoming these dogs would be appreciated.

I had never considered a problem like that! I can understand adding speed, but wondering why they didn't stop to consider the lack of fur on these dogs... and also that Greys are more like sprinters. Interesting to find out about and I'm glad you and others are working to help place some of these dogs! Please keep us posted!

I recently fostered a lurcher pup and found him to be extremely smart and confident at the wee age of 8 weeks. There are lots of lurchers in central california that are used as coyote hunters and then discarded when no longer needed..it is a shame..they are very much like the greyhound in temperment.
Morgan is an absolute doll...good look in finding him a home...
