Shelter Sponsorship

The Galgo Rescue International Network is embarking upon a new adventure that we hope will bring aid to all of the shelters helping the galgos of Spain. Each shelter will be assigned a representative from GRIN who will maintain contact with the shelter, help organize shipments of supplies to the shelters, and provide assistance whenever and however possible.

We work throughout the year to collect supplies - coats, collars, leashes, veterinary supplies, antiparasitic medications, etc. - to give to the shelters. With the aid of Operation Scooby, G.R.I.N. has delivered hundreds of coats, collars and huge amounts of medical supplies to Scooby Protectora De Animales and Amigos De Los Galgos. We hope to send supplies to the smaller shelters through our Shelter Sponsorship program and with the help of Americans travelling to Spain. Our latest success was the delivery of 10 coats, 80 collars, 30 leashes, 50 doses of flea and tick preventative, and Front Line flea and tick spray to DDEVIDA Defensa de los Derechos de la Vida Animal in Utrera (Sevilla) in July 2007.

If you are interested in becoming a GRIN Shelter Representative, or if you will be travelling to Spain and would be willing to carry supplies to the shelters in need, please contact This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it .

Emergency Assistance Fund

Emergency Assistance Fund - G.R.I.N.From time to time G.R.I.N. will come to the emergency aid of special cases, such as individual animals in need of extensive veterinary care or shelters facing extreme hardship. We have established the G.R.I.N. Emergency Assistance Fund for these special cases. Currently, grants through the EAF may be up to $300. 2007 EAF Distribution - Cepo the Podenco

Cepo is a very special Podenco being cared for by Pro-Galgo and Evolucion, both are welfare organizations in Spain. Cepo was caught in a leg hold trap and suffered devastating degloving injury to his leg. G.R.I.N. granted $300 from the EAF to help with Cepo's veterinary expenses.

Emergency Assistance Fund - G.R.I.N.Pro-Galgo writes about Cepo: "CEPO, a little podenco mix was found caught in an illegal trap.  The neighbours new who had set the trap there but first nobody wanted to name this man.  Then after the dog had been taken to a vet , some people contacted with the police and named the man, several rescue groups and shelters have already sent their "denuncia", (report) to the SEPRONA (section of the spanich police to protect the environmen). CEPO is been spoil in a foster home in madrid, near the clinic he had been taken to and is recovering slowly but steadily from his horror. PRO-GALGO has a long#term fosterfamily as well as several home offers in germany for CEPO but he is not ready yet for a trip trough Europe but we are all convinced that he will make it and become a happy doggy."

2007 EAF Distribution – Arwen

Arwen was found May 2007 wandering all alone near the town of Palencia, Spain.  She had endured a terrible trauma that left her leg and back feet without any soft tissue.  The damage was ghastly.  Maggots were living in her flesh and she suffered broken bones to her feet as well as torn tendons.  Cristina Pascual of Amigos de Milord rescued her and with the help of many people worldwide she was able to receive the veterinary care she needed to slowly heal. It took three months of a labor of love by the foster mom Anna as well as Arwen’s will to live, to heal. Word spread about this deserving galga and Arwen had a loving home waiting for her in no time.  Today Arwen lives a safe and wonderful life in France with her companion German Shepard and a loving family.  G.R.I.N. granted $300 from the EAF to help with Arwen's veterinary expenses.

Emergency Assistance Fund - G.R.I.N.2007 EAF Distribution – Miko

About a month before Arwen was to leave her foster home, a tiny two-month-old galga was found tossed by the side of the road left to die.  She was also in a very poor condition, sick and dehydrated.  She was brought to Cristina who placed her with Anna and Arwen. Arwen immediately shared her bed with Miko and Arwen became her surrogate mother until she was well enough to make the trip to the US to her adoptive home.  Miko has found happiness on a ranch in Colorado where she spends her days as part of a big happy animal family as well as living like a princess at home.  Miko finds comfort of laying with the family’s Greyhounds, her way of showing that she will never forget Arwen and the journey they began together.  G.R.I.N. granted $300 from the EAF to help with Miko's veterinary expenses.

2008 EAF Distribution – Noa

Noa is a three-month-old galga who was found gravely injured after being run down by a car.  With both front legs badly broken, Noa’s survival was uncertain.  Shortly after her rescue by Cristina Pascual of Amigos De Milord, Noa became terribly ill but her will to survive has amazed us all and she now awaits transport to the U.S.  G.R.I.N. granted $400 from the EAF to help with Miko's veterinary expenses.

2008 EAF Distribution – Noel

Noel was saved from hanging by the rescuers of Galgos Sin Fronteras, but not before suffering a full-thickness wound around the entire circumference of his neck inflicted by the rope placed by cruel hunters.  He is recovering well and awaits his forever home.  G.R.I.N. granted $300 from the EAF to help with Noel's veterinary expenses.

Shelter Aid

In addition to the Shelter Representative Program, GRIN is launching a new program called "Shelter Aid". Every two months, GRIN will select a Spanish shelter (at random) to receive a financial grant. During that four month period, the representative for that shelter and the GRIN Board will organize fundraisers with a portion of the proceeds being paid to the shelter. Grants will vary in amount and may be up to $500.

  • October 2006 - January 2007: Scooby Protectora De Animales

Our first Shelter Aid effort recipient, Scooby Protectora De Animales, received a grant of $2300 (approximately 1600EU) from the proceeds of our January Carpe Canem auction.

From Eva Andrews, Scooby Representative: "I would like to thank you for all you do for Scooby and all the dogs in Spain.  We are very fortunate to have you as friends.  Every time you take dogs from Scooby, you are making room for more in the shelter.  And once they are in the US, that is one more ambassador that can educate people about the problems in Spain.
I look forward to meeting in person one day.. hopefully it will be on the grounds of Scooby, where we can share our passion while being around them... and of a bottle of nice Spanish wine would wouldn't hurt either."

  • February - May 2007: Amigos De Los Galgos

Amigos De Los Galgos will be receiving a grant of $1000 as part of the proceeds from our May Carpe Canem auction and donations received through First Giving, a web-based fundraising organization.

From Nuria Blanco, Amigos De Los Galgos, upon receiving donated medications and supplies from G.R.I.N.: "THANKS A LOT TO THE TEAM !!!!  Yesterday, I went to collect the bag. All is ok and perfect, it will be of a great help for our dogs, be sure!!  We have some dogs with Leishmaniose and we have to treat them. The front line, is Great.... the hot weather has began and with it the increase of ticks populations in Spain, so it is more than necessary for our dogs.  Lots of thanks, Nuria."

And again from Nuria Blanco upon receipt of the $1000 Shelter Aid Grant:  I received 700 euros, what must be your dollars as they come from you.  THANKS A LOT TO EVERY BODY WHO MADE IT POSSIBLE.  This money is UNIQUELY for our dogs.  I sent 1000 euros for the new Association " La Luz de su Mirada " in La Villa de D. Fadrique
