Derby is running free at the Bridge with many of your friends that also left us too soon. We probably will never know what brought her down. The vet suspected meningomyelitis which is a swelling of the spinal cord. We don't know what caused it. Derby was the first Greyhound to own the McInis family. She came to us as a foster after a frantic call from Betty Kaplan who needed to move her after she beat up Betty's old dog Stanley. I was horrified! I had a 6 year old daughter and CGA wanted to move this beast into my home! As it turned out, once the giardia cleared up and a bad tooth was pulled, the real Derby emerged. She has helped several dozen fosters learn the ropes as they prepared for their forever homes. Her favorite "training" was to reinforce cat safety by introducing the new foster to our cat who would hiss and swat at the unsuspecting pooch. She also gave lessons in toilet drinking, barking at the back door, squirrel watching/chasing and backyard patrolling. Derby was bossy and pushy. She ruled the house only because everyone else let her. She kept the cats under control with a snarl and a "rar, rar, rar". She accepted the neighbor Greyhound Maris grudgingly. She loved to run which made her last days so sad. She kept her girlish figure and good muscle tone by running a dozen figure 8s through the yard. She was addicted to scratches and hugs. Summer was her favorite season because of the exposed skin on shorts wearing humans. She loved to stick her nose up the shorts and sneeze! Derby will live on in the people I have met through her. I will see her in the eyes of every dog searching for a Forever Home. I will miss my dear friend but rejoice that she was in my life. - Bev McInis |
