Greyhound Rescue Society of Texas Special Needs Hounds

Shyla needs your help.On Thursday July 8th, 2010, a rescue of what was thought to be 14 greyhounds took place in south Ft. Worth. When Ft. Worth Animal Care & Control arrived to pick up the hounds, it was discovered that there were actually 28 hounds, desperately in need of help. They were living outdoors in crates stacked on top of each other with no food or water...

Letter from Greyhounds Rescue Holland to GRIN?

Dear GRIN Supporters, we thought we would like to share with you this email we just received from Greyhounds Rescue Holland.

Dear Mrs. Shaw, hello Telma,

We dont know each other, yet we share the same mission; saving and protecting that poor galgo.  Although we havent met, thanks to our volunteer Vera in Malaga, I do know a lot about you and your organization G.R.I.N., dont worry: only good things.  We know that you are helping several Spanish volunteers in taking galgo's from the perrera's (killing stations), galgo's that later on will be given a chance to be adopted, e.g. by putting them on our adoption site.

In this way, unconsciously, G.R.I.N. and GRH are working together.

I would like to express my deepest respect and gratitude for all the good work you are doing!
If there's anything in any way we can help you with in the future, dont hesitate to ask us.
Keep up the good work!

With kind regards, to you and all your volunteers,

Geert van Spronsen.

Sevilla 2010 - Walk with Galgos and Podencos in Sevilla, Spain

Sevilla 2010 - Walk with Galgos and Podencos in Sevilla, SpainSpanish Galgo group GALGOS 112 AND DDEVIDA organized a walk with galgos and podencos in the city of Sevilla that was held on June 27, 2010!

The objective was to show that galgos and podencos make wonderful pets and to life the status of Spanish hunting dogs to that of companion pets.  As you can see from the photos, everyone had a great time.

G.R.I.N. is happy to see that progress is being made in Spain by these devoted and hard working rescue friends who are chipping away at the misconceptions of older generations that think that these wonderful dogs do not deserve the same treatment as other companion dogs. We applaud their efforts of our friends as they continue to fight for the rights of the galgos and podencos!

Thanks to Encarni of DDEVIDA for passing these wonderful photos of the event to us.  Keep up the great work!

Chica the Galga

Chica the GalgaHello GRIN SUPPORTERS:  G.R.I.N. has been able to collaborate with Vera Thorenaar Reddering in Malaga Spain and Greyhounds Rescue Holland.  Vera has been fostering one galgo at a time, preparing them for their transition to a forever home and then moving them on to Holland with the help of Greyhound Rescue Holland.  We are honored to be part of helping her give these galgos a chance. Your donations have made a difference to this one special little girl named Chica.  At one point in her fostering she appeared to have trouble breathing, her heart was racing and needed immediate veterinary care. She was diagnosed with athletic heart meaning she had been run so hard and for so long she succumbed to this malady. Luckily she was treated and now is doing just fine.  This month she has been adopted and is on her way to Holland to a very experienced forever home. Congratulations Chica, although you had a tough beginning, the good life continues...read below from Vera:

Hi, Yes Chica came from Isabel.  She got her out of the perrera in Seville with another 14 more.  They were travelling to Murcia the next day, to an English community there who foster the galgos adopted in England during the 6 months mandatory quarantine before they can travel.  When they got to Isabels dog hotel to stay overnight before travelling to Murcia, Chica escaped so she didn't travel the next day.  The dog hotel is in an open area with olive trees.  They left a door open and food and water.  They could see her around and she came and had her food at night and then disappeared again.  Until she decided to come into the dog hotel after 14 days wandering around the area.  I saw her on Isabel's page and choose her because she was very traumatized and needed urgently a home environment.  She came to Isabel in October 2009 and to me on the 14th April, so she will have been with us for 3 months and 10 days. In the beginning she didn't want to get near us although, when she laid on her bed we could touch her.  When you moved a chair she rushed way, so frightened.  After a view days of sausages and lots of dedication she would approach me, but no way with my husband.

When we had visitors she would bark at a distance and not even come to me.  This gradually got better, of course, but after having left her in a dog hotel during our holidays and on her return home, she made the big step forwards.  Like saying: wauw, they havent abandoned me again, they must be reliable. Now she is very sweet and joyful, moves her tail a lot although she still doesn't like visitors too much.

Update: Oco - Makes It To France!?

Oco - Makes It To France!?G.R.I.N. Supporters YOU are part of this story! We are happy that we were able to help fund the transport of Oco from Spain to France where he will now have a chance at a better life out of the clutches of the dreaded hunters..here is what his foster moms said

Hi Charl,

I wanted to send you an email with photos of Oco's journey back to our home, just so you can see how it was - and be reassured that he is well and very happy! What a beautiful, confident, lovely boy. Ross and him have bonded straight away and he sits next to Ross on the sofa already as you'll see from the picture, obviously next to Estrella as she doesn't leave the sofa.

He is very interested in the bunnies and marking his territory over everything too, but he's gorgeous and he's going to fit in just fine here I'm certain.

I hope you like the pictures and talk to you soon! I hope you don't miss him too much - we're going to look after him for you!

Frances

Update on Sofie and Angie Fall Trip to Spain

A plan is now in place to bring Sofie, Angie and one more galga named Miel, back from Spain to loving homes in the U.S. this fall. The date of return is Oct. 5th 2010.

After so many months of watching these two girls go through all their health issues, and with people from all around the United States, Canada, France, United Kingdom, Spain and Australia helping them G.R.I.N. members Telma Shaw and Wally Lacey of California have decided to help them on to their new lives.  Wally will be adopting Sofie, and Don and Elaine Irving (also in California) will be adopting Angie - the last of the original four Jaen Galgos and one Podenco who were saved from the kill station back in February.  Miel, a 8 month old galga who was rescued by Silvia Bordetas Gil from a life of breeding, will go into a foster home in Oceanside California as well.

Telma and Wally will also be touring the south of Spain visiting various shelters with local rescuers, Charlotte del Rio and Vera Thorenaar Reddering who works with Greyhounds Rescue Holland.  The trip will conclude in Valencia, where Silvia Bordetas Gil will prepare the dogs for them for their long journey to freedom then off to Madrid to fly home to San Diego.  The level of commitment to these dogs by the rescuers in Spain is the amazing part of all of this.

With your help, we are touching the lives of the dogs that are under their care and also showing support to the rescuers who appreciate so much knowing that they have friends in the United States who care about them as well.  Updates will follow for now these three galgos have a bright future.
